My first game jam submission !

New Year's 2023 was a big event for me. I got engaged (one of the biggest highlights of my life) and for one of my New Year's resolutions was releasing a game (or 10 :D ). I started learning Godot 4 at the end 2022 and how better to get my feet wet than participating in a Game Jam. Godot Wild Jam 55 fit well with my schedule, and I wanted to see how much I learned so far.

Honestly, when the theme "Dreams" was announced, I wanted to throw in the towel right away, because I could not come up with any idea. Then, after 2 days of brainstorming I decided I should build around the concept of flying, since many of my dreams involve flying of some sort. I have never worked on a 3D game before, but I pushed myself to do it, since I could not imagine finishing a 2D game about flight in the allotted time.

About the topic of time, a week seems a lot of time, and I think it is not too bad (much longer and you run into the danger of losing focus), if you know your tools very well, but having never done a game in 3D and having to do all the little bits made it tighter than I wanted in the end. I had to learn just enough about Blender (I know Blender, but it has changed so much since I used it the last time) and the 3D features of Godot to make the game work.

Another area where I had to cut corners was the music: I thought I would be able to produce at least one background track, but when you have to do so many things, there is only that much mental energy left. So I leveraged my Epidemic Sound subscription and used a song from their vast collection.

So all in all. this was a great learning experience - diving deeper into Godot 4, brushing up on Blender, making a game in a limited amount of time and getting to learn to release on itch.io.  It already feels like a huge success, no matter what the outcome.
